The difference between 316 Seamless and welded pipe
The 316 grade stainless steel, like A312 Tp316 products, incorporates chromium and nickel for enhanced corrosion resistance. Moreover, SS 316 Welded Pipe or 316 Stainless Steel Pipe contains molybdenum, further bolstering its corrosion resistance.
In terms of manufacturing, there are two primary methods utilized for shaping pipes from this material. Firstly, seamless pipes are crafted through a process known as cold drawing. This technique involves shaping the raw material into a pipe form without any subsequent welding. As a result, seamless pipes exhibit a uniform structure without any seams.
Conversely, SS 316 Welded Pipe are fabricated by welding a sheet along its longitudinal axis, forming it into a curved pipe shape. Some ASTM A312 Tp316 piping undergo spiral welding to enhance their strength. The key distinction lies in the presence of seams, which can lead to variations in wall thickness for welded pipes, creating undulations. This variance in wall thickness, known as absolute roughness, is significantly less pronounced in seamless pipes. As a consequence, seamless pipes generally exhibit smoother internal surfaces compared to their welded counterparts.
