What is Allowable Working Pressure in Stainless Steel Pipe
Mcneil Instrument manufactures stainless steel pipes using various materials with specific compositions. Each material grade has its own yield and tensile strength values. Yield strength indicates the maximum stress a material can handle without permanently changing shape, while tensile strength shows when the pipe will break under opposing forces.
Mcneil Instrument provides ratings for working pressure and bursting pressure for its pipes, which are crucial for operations under different temperatures and pressures. Maximum allowable working pressure sets the limit for the pressure at which the pipe can operate without deforming. Bursting pressure indicates the maximum pressure that causes the pipe to rupture. These ratings vary based on the material, diameter, wall thickness, and schedule of the pipe.
For example, standard wrought steel pipes with schedule 40 have an allowable working pressure of 1080 PSI for a diameter of ¾ inches. As the diameter increases, the allowable working pressure decreases. For instance, 1-inch pipes have a working pressure of 1010 PSI, and 1 ¼ inch pipes are rated at 840 PSI. The calculation of working pressure uses Barlow’s formula, where the pipe’s yield strength is multiplied by its design factor to determine the allowable working pressure.
