What is Allowable Working Pressure in Stainless Steel Pipe
Mcneil Instrument manufactures stainless steel pipes using various materials with specific compositions. Each material grade has its own yield and tensile strength values. Yield strength is the point where the material can handle stress without permanently changing shape, while tensile strength is the point where the pipe will break under opposing forces.
Mcneil Instrument provides ratings for working pressure and bursting pressure for its pipes, which are essential for operations under different temperatures and pressures. The maximum allowable working pressure is the highest pressure the pipe can handle without deforming. Bursting pressure is the point at which the pipe will rupture. These pressure ratings vary based on the material, diameter, wall thickness, and schedule of the pipe.
For example, standard wrought steel pipes at schedule 40 have an allowable working pressure of 1080 PSI for a diameter of ¾ inches. As the diameter increases, the allowable working pressure decreases. For example, 1-inch pipes have a working pressure of 1010 PSI, and 1 ¼ inch pipes are rated at 840 PSI. The working pressure is calculated using Barlow’s formula, where the pipe’s yield strength is multiplied by its design factor to determine the allowable working pressure.
