What is Allowable Working Pressure in Stainless Steel Pipe
Mcneil Instrument manufactures stainless steel pipes using various materials with unique compositions. Each material grade has specific yield and tensile strength values. Yield strength indicates how much stress the material can handle without permanently changing shape, while tensile strength shows the maximum stress the pipe can withstand before breaking.
Mcneil Instrument provides working pressure and bursting pressure ratings for its pipes, crucial for operations under different temperatures and pressures. Maximum allowable working pressure defines the highest pressure at which the pipe can operate without deforming. On the other hand, bursting pressure indicates the pressure at which the pipe may rupture. These ratings vary based on the pipe’s material, diameter, wall thickness, and schedule.
For example, standard wrought steel pipes at schedule 40 have an allowable working pressure of 1080 PSI for a ¾-inch diameter. Notably, as the diameter increases, the allowable working pressure decreases. For instance, 1-inch pipes have a working pressure of 1010 PSI, while 1 ¼ inch pipes are rated at 840 PSI. Calculating working pressure uses Barlow’s formula, where the pipe’s yield strength is multiplied by its design factor to determine the allowable working pressure.
