Yield strength denotes the threshold at which the material can endure deformation without permanent alteration, while tensile strength signifies the point at which the pipe will rupture when subjected to opposing forces.
Mcneil Instrument provides working pressure and bursting pressure ratings for its pipes, essential for operations under diverse temperature and pressure conditions. The maximum allowable working pressure delineates the pressure limit at which the pipe can function without undergoing deformation. Conversely, bursting pressure indicates the pressure threshold at which the pipe initiates rupture. These pressure values vary depending on the material, diameter, wall thickness, and schedule of the pipe.
For instance, standard wrought steel pipes at schedule 40 exhibit an allowable working pressure of 1080 PSI for a diameter of ¾ inches. Notably, as the diameter increases, the allowable working pressure diminishes. For example, 1-inch pipes feature a working pressure of 1010 PSI, while 1 ¼ inch pipes have a rating of 840 PSI. The determination of working pressure involves Barlow’s formula, wherein the pipe’s yield strength is multiplied by its design factor to derive the allowable working pressure.
