What is Allowable Working Pressure in Stainless Steel Pipe
Mcneil Instrument manufactures stainless steel pipes using various materials, each with specific compositions and strength characteristics. Yield strength indicates how much stress a material can handle without permanent deformation, while tensile strength measures the maximum stress a pipe can withstand before breaking.
We provide ratings for working pressure and bursting pressure for our pipes, crucial for handling different temperature and pressure conditions. Maximum allowable working pressure defines the highest pressure a pipe can withstand without deforming. Bursting pressure indicates the pressure at which the pipe will fail and rupture. These ratings depend on the material, diameter, wall thickness, and schedule of the pipe.
For example, standard wrought steel pipes with schedule 40 have a working pressure of 1080 PSI for a ¾-inch diameter. The working pressure decreases as the diameter increases: 1-inch pipes have a rating of 1010 PSI, and 1 ¼ inch pipes are rated at 840 PSI. The working pressure is calculated using Barlow’s formula, which multiplies the pipe’s yield strength by a design factor to determine the allowable working pressure.
