What is Allowable Working Pressure in Stainless Steel Pipe
Mcneil Instrument manufactures stainless steel pipes using various materials with specific compositions. Each material grade has defined yield and tensile strength values. Yield strength indicates how much stress the material can withstand without permanent deformation, while tensile strength shows the maximum stress the pipe can handle before breaking.
Our pipes are rated for working pressure and bursting pressure, crucial for operations under different temperatures and pressures. The maximum allowable working pressure sets the limit at which the pipe can operate safely without deforming. Bursting pressure indicates the pressure at which the pipe will fail and rupture. These ratings depend on factors like the material type, pipe diameter, wall thickness, and schedule.
For example, standard wrought steel pipes at schedule 40 have an allowable working pressure of 1080 PSI for a ¾-inch diameter. The working pressure decreases as the diameter increases: 1-inch pipes have a rating of 1010 PSI, and 1 ¼ inch pipes are rated at 840 PSI. The determination of working pressure uses Barlow’s formula, multiplying the pipe’s yield strength by a design factor to calculate the allowable working pressure.
