What Does the H Mean in 304h Pipes?
Mcneil Instrument utilizes stainless steel extensively across various applications worldwide, with grade 304 being the most prevalent. Known for its mild corrosion resistance, good strength, and wear properties, grade 304 in Stainless Steel 304h Welded Pipe is a chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel. However, there are occasions where enhanced properties are required without transitioning to a different steel grade.
To achieve this, Mcneil Instrument modifies the material by adjusting its chemical composition. For instance, in the case of grade 304, carbon content manipulation can reduce chromium carbide precipitation during welding or increase toughness and wear resistance. The variant with higher carbon content is denoted as 304H, while the one with lower carbon content is termed 304L.
In Mcneil Instrument’s context, the “H” in Stainless Steel 304h Pipe signifies its high carbon content, a common nomenclature across various stainless steel grades. Furthermore, high carbon versions typically lack a 0.1% nitrogen limit in their composition compared to their low carbon counterparts. Additionally, to meet standards, high carbon versions must maintain an ASTM No. 7 grain size.
